Exploring, Creating, and Innovating: Play and Programming for Kids
As we look toward a technology-driven future, we must equip our children with the skills they need to succeed. The Board of Parents at Mountain School Buea invited the DELC Foundation to help find a way for children to learn how to interact with digital interfaces, recognizing that this is essential for their future. Testing and designing this program began during the holidays with various students, ultimately leading to a finalized plan for implementation.
The success of this program is largely due to the students of PMS Buea, whose curiosity and eagerness to learn have inspired us. This program actively supports their ICT classes, which is part of the curriculum established by the Ministry of Basic Education.
Visible improvements in their numeracy and literacy skills have been noted as students read instructions and solve problems. Students also participate in teamwork and testing their ideas has become increasingly common. Every Friday at noon, they engage in dynamic coding sessions that foster creativity, critical thinking, and essential digital skills.
Why Integrate Play and Scratch Programming into Your School Curriculum?
Incorporating SCRATCH programming into your curriculum can greatly benefit young learners by merging creativity with technology. Here are some compelling reasons to consider this initiative for your school:
- Enhances Literacy and Numeracy Skills: – SCRATCH offers a fun way for students to develop their math skills through engaging logic puzzles. Storytelling projects help improve reading and writing abilities. This approach makes learning enjoyable and effective!
- Cultivates Technological Proficiency: – Introducing programming concepts early provides students with a strong foundation that prepares them for future studies and careers in STEM fields.
- Promotes Creative Expression: – SCRATCH empowers students to invent their own games, stories, and animations, allowing their creativity to flourish and enabling them to turn their ideas into reality.
This pilot program at PMS Buea has demonstrated how Play and Scratch can positively transform the educational experience by
Encouraging Interactive Learning: -Students have created simple yet meaningful animations that effectively communicate ideas and concepts.
Building Confidence: – Even those without prior coding experience are adapting and thriving in this new environment.
Fostering Community Involvement: -Parents and teachers are enthusiastic about this program and its positive impact on the students’ educational journeys. By embracing SCRATCH Programming, we can create an engaging and enriching learning environment that empowers our children for the future.
